I have being playing netball since Year 5. My PE teacher played netball herself which helped us form a really good team who trained frequently together. This allowed me to progress playing netball into secondary school. It was here where my passion for the sport developed. I became captain of the school team and began playing at a county level.
Have you been inspired by other coaches?
Absolutely! After school I joined Greencroft netball club who are an England Netball Accredited Bronze CAPS club and continued my education at Gateshead Sports College. Both have really great coaches and helped me develop further as a player and gave me my first experience as a coach.
This inspired me to start my coaching degree and to play for Team Northumbria. Team Northumbria has developed my skills and knowledge of netball dramatically as the coaches are amazing!
Having good coaches has made me want to become a good coach. I have learned great skills and knowledge that I have been able to apply in my sessions.
I coach netball for Leisureworks, a Leisure trust in Derwentside Co. Durham, which enables me to coach in schools to try and get more children involved the sport.
I also coach Ryton ladies which has been a brilliant opportunity for me. I have given the club my experience and knowledge, helping to develop their abilities. Hopefully I will be starting a junior Ryton club. This will be a Satellite Club funded through Tyne & Wear Sport and supported by England Netball.
I still play for Greencroft netball and volunteer to coach sessions there as well.
What support have you received on your coaching journey?
As well as the ongoing support of my coaches and academic staff at Northumbria I was fortunate to receive a Coaching Bursary from Tyne and Wear Sport. Their financial assistance helped me to undertake my UKCC Level 2 qualification in September. This has been invaluable and will help me progress further with my coaching.
The Coach Bursary scheme is managed by Tyne & Wear Sport and will financially support people to either become newly qualified as coaches or to improve existing coaches' qualifications. 75% of your course could be funded, up to a maximum of £300.
