Starting her netball journey aged 11, Emily is one of the region's youngest and most active volunteers. Here we find out a bit more about Emily's experience of Netball.
How long have you been involved in netball?
About 8 years. I started volunteering in Netball whilst at school, organising the senior teams and then helping out with lower school training once I joined 6th form. And from there my involvement with netball has grown - I keep doing more and more.
When and why did you get involved in the Pass on Your Passion scheme?
My PE teacher, Rachel Cassidy, introduced me to the scheme 2 years ago once I had shown an interest in helping out at school training. She suggested it was a good way to record my hours and I would get rewards for them too! It seemed a no brainer, I was already volunteering and enjoying it, knowing that I would continue for the foreseeable future and so it was an opportunity not to be missed!
What would you say to anybody thinking about getting involved in the scheme?
Just do it! If you already volunteer in netball for any amount of time or if you are looking to get involved then sign up. It’s a great scheme to get rewards for all of your hard work and you have fun whilst doing it. It opens doors to amazing opportunities as once people hear you are on the scheme, they offer you volunteer positions. From helping out at the regional schools finals to being a mascot assistant at the England Netball match against Malawi in December I’ve had some great opportunities and in April I’m going to join the delivery team for the youth tournament at Disneyland Paris. Through this I’ve been encouraged to get my C award umpiring qualification which I’m currently working towards and now I’m looking to do a coaching qualification. It also looks great on job or University applications as it’s a record of your volunteering. The rewards are good too - I’ve already received a Water bottle, a Squistle, a Tee-shirt and now a Hoody!
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
I just love it, it gets me more involved in netball, I meet new people, I’m constantly learning new things and get some fab opportunities. I really enjoy helping out at school and watching those teams improve and progress with their netball.
