The 2016 campaign starts in January and hopes are high that the Sport Central club can push for a top four place.
Northumbria University’s Head of Performance Netball, Te Aroha Keenan, is confident her players can make a significant impact and New Zealand Netball’s reigning Coach of the Year revealed: “I couldn’t be happier with the players I’ve been able to bring in. I’m even happier that there’s such a strong emphasis on youth. Developing young players is a priority for me and I think we have some exciting talent here. I’ve been at Northumbria for a few weeks now but this announcement is really focusing everyone’s minds on the job in hand. The new NSL season seems very close now and we’ll be stepping up our preparations with friendlies against Team Bath and Loughborough Lightning this weekend.”
Darlington’s Leah Kennedy is back for a seventh season and will share defensive duties with returning favourite Natalie Connor, New Zealander Tuaine Keenan and Emily Hollingworth.
Jamaican World Cup duo Nicole Dixon and Shanice Beckford will add pace and flair in the final third.
And Kiwi shooter Chiara Semple will vie for a starting place alongside Sport Central favourite Lisa Bowman and Scottish pair Jo Pettitt and Gemma Sole.
Coach Keenan is spoilt for choice in centre court with Rebecca Neil, Jaydene Robinson, Samantha Murphy, Hattie Grant and Brie Grierson all in the frame for a starting spot.
Northumbria University Director of Sport Colin Stromsoy added: “The Netball Superleague has been a key priority for a number of seasons now. I feel that as a University we have successfully positioned ourselves at the heart of the North East’s netball community and we can count on incredible support as a result. Where we need to make significant progress is on the court and this group of players has an excellent opportunity to develop under Te Aroha and her team. I am very excited about the future of netball at Northumbria University and the new Superleague season can’t come soon enough.”
