The league was previously set up by Sports Development Manager Stephen Newham in 2014, but after a job change the league was under threat to end.
Thornaby player and new league organiser Eyv Hardwick took over the league to allow 10 teams to continue to compete in one division at a local level. She said: “There was high demand over the summer for the league to continue. We needed a league which was level entry, fun, friendly and would give ladies the confidence to raise skills and confidence in order to access netball at a competitive level, which could feed players and clubs up into higher level leagues.”
Back to Netball is an England netball initiative designed to attract ladies who may not have played netball since school, or who need a refresher on the rules.
All players must be aged 16 or over, affiliated to England Netball and must not play in any other league – it is aimed at players who are true back to netball.
The Thornaby league is made up of Thornaby Spitfires, Stockton One and Two, Classics Ingleby, Teesside Uni, Thornaby Skittles, Aston, Stokesley, Bray Angels and East Durham Belles.
The league is played on a Wednesday night. If anyone is interested in joining a team and the league, please contact Eyv Hardwick by emailing Eyvhardwick@sky.com.
